Sick of verdana and trebuchet? Well, coming in 2006, Microsoft will be releasing six new typefaces -- including one by Luc(as) de Groot -- as part of their OS. Luc de Groot designed one of my favorite typefaces, Thesis. And, not so surprisingly, Calibris, one of the six new typefaces to debut in 2006, looks very similar to Thesis Sans.
Microsoft's claim is that these new typefaces are designed to look good for both screen and print use. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Personally, I find that typefaces that look good online have a heavy type color and look too thick when printed. Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction for Microsoft. Now, if only they could also introduce a new dingbat font so we have common (if not universal) UI elements such as bullets, arrows, carts, etc. packed in a single font so that we no longer have to create graphics for these.
