Somewhat macabre, but it seems that artists/designers have found interesting ways to convey death statistics. The New York Times, for instance, recently ran a graphical map showing homicides in New York City's five boroughs between 2003 and 2005: Homicides and Crime in New York City - New York Times Interactive Graphic. Instead of their typical stylized maps, however, they opted to implement is as a Google map mashup.
SF Gate chose a Tufte-esque infographic approach when they ran a feature on suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge.
